I. GETTING STARTED: ABOUT THE GAME
The object of Boxcars is turn all of the dice on the logic board into
sixes or "Boxcars" using the fewest possible number of moves.
The strange thing about this game is that some people will just not
"get it" as they say. While the game is simple and with some thought,
easy, some individuals can not figure this game out. They will be
hopelessly lost on board 1 while others will be blazing through the
boards. I think it has to do with the ability to see and recognize
a pattern when it presents itself. Some see and some don't.
Some of the boards will be easy, others quite hard. There are many
solutions for every board. The thing to remember is that whenever
the pawn is moved next to any die, the value of the die will change.
If the pawn is moved between two dice then they will both change.
The value the die will change to follows a set pattern. Knowing the
pattern is key to winning the game and moving to the next logic board.
You'll have to figure the pattern out for yourself.
Logic boards 1 - 20 have a best score displayed. This number is the
number of moves that you must match to get to the next logic board.
Boards 1 - 20 can all be solved using more moves than the best score
but you will not advance to the next board until you have matched or
beaten the best score displayed.
You may also play randomly generated games by starting Boxcars with
a command string. Example BOXCARS 525 will generate the 525th logic
board for you to solve. Randomly generated logic boards begin with
a value of 250 for the best number of moves. Solving a random board
in only 100 moves causes that best score to be saved to disk. Anyone
playing that board will have to solve it in at least as many moves as
you did. If they solve it in 30 moves then that will be the new best
score for that board. When playing a random board the next board is
NOT generated for you. Whatever board you are currently playing will
remain on the screen to allow you to try and better your score.
Note: The randomly generated boards range from 21 to 999.
Press H to hide the Boxcars display if the boss shows up.
Press H again to redisplay the game.
Press Q to quit. Boxcars does NOT ask "are you sure?"
Press S to toggle the sound on and off.
Press R to reset the current logic board for a fresh start.
You'll use the R command a lot.
Press D to run a demonstration logic board so that you can see how the
game works and the effect the pawn has on the dice.
Some people have asked why only four sides of a die are used in Boxcars.
Believe me, you wouldn't want to try it with all six sides. The amount
of time it would take and the number of moves required would drive you
crazy. I created a version that used all six sides of the dice but
found while I was testing the program that 9 out of 10 people enjoyed
playing the game with just four sides of the dice. In addition, if you
made one move out of sequence you were doomed.
This is the second game I have written using QuickBasic 4.5 as an
exercize in learning how to use the QB graphics statements. I have
made every attempt to hunt down and exterminate any bugs in the code.
It appears to be free of errors and "undocumented features."
Enjoy the game and pass it on to your friends.

Boxcars is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the
user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but
please do not give it away altered or as part of another system. The
essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide
incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. If you
find this program useful and find that you are using Boxcars and
continue to use Boxcars after a reasonable trial period, you must make
a registration payment as described on the first page of this document.
The applicable registration fee will license one copy for use on any
one computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like
a book. An example is that this software may be used by any number of
people and may be freely moved from one computer location to another,
so long as there is no possibility of it being used at one location
while it's being used at another. Just as a book cannot be read by
two different persons at the same time.
Anyone distributing Boxcars for any kind of remuneration must first
contact Jim Radcliffe at the address above for authorization. This
authorization will be automatically granted to distributors recognized
as adhering to the guidelines for shareware distributors,
and such distributors may begin offering Boxcars immediately (However
Jim Radcliffe must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept
up-to-date with the latest version of Boxcars.).
You are encouraged to pass a copy of Boxcars along to your friends
for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they
find that they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of
the latest version of the Boxcars program.
